Initially I was interested in landscapes, studying the sky with the assortment of shapes and colours that it forms
everyday was fascinating. This combined with another passion I had for Architecture, I now intended to
concentrate on cityscapes. The idea of the rich mechanicalism and diversity that comes from a city, whilst warm
cool colours and formations floated above was a fantastic contradiction that I wanted to explore.
Consequently through the progression of my practice, my work explores relationships, displacement, and
confusion of space. Initially my train of thought started by looking at American maps, observing the geometric
elements such as the grid effect they use to plan their lives, then tying this interest in with the city and
architecture.
Much of my style has been adopted from a ‘sketchy’ Duchamp approach; as a result I tend to reference such
styles as cubism and futurism to create an abstracted quality to the scenes. Within my work I tend to start by
focussing on a predominant feature in a scene and working around it. For example, a strong geometric shape or
line a building is creating, or even a vanishing point or horizon. Inside my current practice I see my work moving in
two directions; ‘Simplicity within relationships’ against ‘Complexities within relationships’, consequently, as the
lines, squares, spaces and forms progress, it is all a matter of association!
